The Launceston Chamber of Commerce is concerned that striking power workers and Tasmania’s energy supply network threatened the cancellation of a premium, much needed end-of-season AFL fixture between Hawthorn and North Melbourne at UTAS Stadium.
Alina Bain CEO said “The proposed industrial action and possible impact on the power supply are totally unacceptable. Local business and the community were placed in a position of uncertainty the day before the final match of the AFL season. And this all came at a time where ever-increasing energy costs are impacting our hospitality, retail and, all other businesses who are reliant on discretionary income for their viability.
“The uncertainty impacted everyone. This is a high profile embarrassment for Launceston. The stigma and perception alone that this generates for Launceston is completely inexcusable. Are we really open for business, can we be trusted with events? “Hawthorn games at UTAS are a key part of our business and community year. The games generate confidence, they improve well-being and they give our businesses a much needed revenue boost. Business budgets for a busy trading period around each game, to face the potential loss of a game this late had a negative impact on businesses and their staff. Those responsible should be ashamed.
We will engage with those responsible for future planning around essential services for our businesses.
