The Launceston Chamber of Commerce was formed in 1849 and is the oldest continuously run Chamber in Australia.
The Launceston Chamber of Commerce was formed on the 21st of August, 1849.
From the 17th to the 19th of August, 1849, a newspaper advertisement headlined ”Chamber of Commerce”, authored by a group of businessmen, invited their ‘fellow-colonists to meet them on Tuesday evening next [the 21st of August], for the purpose of deliberating on such measures as may be proposed for benefiting the commercial and maritime as well as agricultural interests of this country…”
It was later reported that at this meeting it was moved by Dr Gaunt and seconded by Captain Neilley that:
It Is desirable that a chamber of commerce should be formed in Launceston for taking under consideration such measures as may from time to time arise affecting the commercial interests of the town and neighbourhood.
At this meeting there was to be a small charge for each attendee. Mr William Henty was requested to act as Treasurer for the newly established Chamber. The Examiner reported that Mr. Henty immediately entered upon duties of office by making a prompt demand for sixpence on each gentlemen present.
From that meeting, the Launceston Chamber of Commerce was born.
