The 47-piece Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra has been performing in Launceston ever since the orchestra was founded in 1948. Each year, the TSO gives a six-concert season in Launceston as well as a free outdoor concert in City Park, RACT Symphony under the Stars.

The TSO is a much loved cultural institution and a ‘source of pride’ to 87% of Tasmanians, according to a recent survey. Interstate touring in recent years has taken the orchestra to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. The orchestra has also toured North and South America, Greece, Israel, South Korea, Indonesia and Japan. The TSO has toured China twice, including a seven-city tour of the Chinese provinces of Jiangsu, Fujian and Shanghai in December 2016 - January 2017. A much recorded orchestra, the TSO has more than 80 CDs in its catalogue. TSO concerts are recorded by ABC Classic FM and are broadcast and streamed throughout Australia and around the world.
