The Hawthorn Football Club is very important to Launceston, especially the business community. Each season is reportedly worth $15 million per annum and the equivalent of 400 Full-time Equivalent jobs. Last weekend the Hawthorn verses Brisbane game attracted 15,800 people on Sunday. The Launceston Chamber of Commerce reports that retailers and hoteliers have advised the past weekend as the best weekend trade they have experienced in months. The Harvest Market also reported that 2,700 people attended the market on Saturday, up nearly 40% on a normal weekend attendance. Maree Tetlow, Executive Officer at the Launceston Chamber of Commerce stated that “visitors came from around Northern Tasmania, the North West and interstate – often staying for the weekend. They are taking time out for shopping, visiting restaurants and attractions, as well as attending the Hawks game”. She went on to say that “the arrangement with the Hawthorn Football Club is obviously working. Just look at where Hawthorn sit at the top of the AFL ladder. It is also working for the Launceston business community, and the broader community. We have all embraced Hawthorn and we want to see the relationship continue” she concluded.
