The Launceston Chamber of Commerce welcomes the announcement by Infrastructure Minister, Rene Hidding, for the government to sign an MOU with the Swire Shipping for export shipping services from Bell Bay.
The Executive Officer of the Launceston Chamber of Commerce, Maree Tetlow, stated that “a more regular export ship servicing the industries at Bell Bay and Northern Tasmania is a positive economic development for our region.”
“Support for this service over a three year period allows the further development of export freight opportunities – especially in light of the new and expanded opportunities that may develop as a result of Tasmania’s latest push into China and other export markets” she said.
Ms Tetlow also advised that “one of the Chamber’s priorities is to ensure that the excellent port infrastructure at Bell Bay is better utilised for the benefit of our region. This development will certainly support that aim. In addition, evidence from previous export services is that a regular export service applies competitive pressure on other freight providers, so that even those not using this service will still benefit to some degree” she concluded.”
The Launceston Chamber of Commerce is working actively with Northern Tasmania Development (NTD) to support an export shipping service and the further development of Bell Bay Port.
