The Launceston Chamber of Commerce was heartened by the improving Labour Force Data for Northern Tasmania released yesterday.
The ABS Labour Force data for Launceston and the North East for Nov 2014 indicated that:
- There are 67,800 employed people in the region, 4,900 more employed than compared to November 2013.
- There are 4,400 unemployed people in the region, 1,100 less unemployed than Nov 2013.
- The unemployment rate is now 6.1% and compares with 8.1% in Nov 2013.
Maree Tetlow, Executive Officer of the Launceston Chamber of Commerce advised that “the improvement in employment statistics recently supports the increased level of business confidence we experienced this month when we conducted our Business Confidence Poll.
A total of 48% of members advised that business conditions have improved from 12 months ago, another 42% indicated the conditions were similar to last year.”
Ms Tetlow said that “we are hopeful that the current trend for employment and jobs growth continues to improve in 2015.
There are a number of construction projects in and around the Launceston area that will ramp up including: Woolworths Supermarket in Wellington Street (construction commenced), North Bank Silos Hotel, the Penny Royal development, UTAS student accommodation at Inveresk, and the James Boag & Sons Tourism Development. These will all add jobs for the construction industry and add further amenity and vibrancy to our city.”
