DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our next \nTamar Valley Leaders Lunch with\nProf. Dominic (Dom) Geraghty\nPro Vice-Chancellor (Launceston)- University of Tasmania\nSustainable Regional Campuses for the North \nProfessor Dom Geraghty is the University’s Pro Vice-Chancellor (Launceston)\, driving delivery of the Northern Transformation’s vision and strategic objectives for our city and region. \nOriginally from Ireland\, where he obtained a BSc (Honours) from the National University of Ireland\, he completed a PhD at Deakin University in 1988.  Dom moved to the University of Tasmania in 1991\, and has become deeply connected with the University and the Launceston region\, researching and teaching here for three decades. The first in his family to attend university\, Dom is passionate about growing the University’s presence and profile\, improving access and increasing educational attainment. \nDom has held a number of senior academic roles at the University\, including Acting Head of the Schools of Human Life Sciences (2012)\, Health Sciences (2016) and Creative Arts and Media (2018-19)\, Deputy Dean of Graduate Research (2012-17) and Chair of the Academic Senate (2017-18). \nAs a pharmacologist and enthusiastic science communicator\, Dom has presented public lectures on health/drugs of abuse awareness and a frequent ‘guest scientist’ on radio. He has co-authored over 250 research papers\, reviews\, book chapters and conference presentations. \nThe $300 million University of Tasmania Northern Transformation Program will see the majority of academic schools and administrative units move from the Newnham Campus to the Inveresk Precinct by semester 1\, 2024.  Over the same timeframe\, the footprint of the Australian Maritime College will increase to encompass the federally funded Defence and Maritime Innovations and Design Precinct and the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania (formerly DPIPWE) will relocate to new and existing buildings at Newnham as the Tasmanian Agricultural Precinct.  Dom’s talk will cover the many initiatives that will ensure the economic\, social and environmental sustainability of both the Newnham and Inveresk sites into the future. \nPlease Note: This is a covid-safe event. DESCRIPTION:From a love of mathematics to leading the way in ocean renewable energy solutions\nProfessor Irene Penesis is the Research Director for the Blue Economy CRC-Co Ltd. Irene’s passion for a transition to renewable energy\, environmental sustainability and decarbonisation of marine and maritime industries led her to developing the successful application to the Commonwealth’s CRC program. Since taking up the role of Research Director in July 2019\, Irene has established five multi-disciplinary research programs\, a brilliant research leadership team\, and collaboratively with their 40 industry\, research and government partners commissioned over $20 million in research projects in areas such as offshore engineering and naval architecture (e.g. hydrogen vessels\, multi-use offshore structures)\, autonomous vehicles\, marine renewable energy technologies\, microgrids\, hydrogen production and storage\, environmental site characterisation\, selection and monitoring\, supply chains\, and regulation and policy. Irene is on the Steering Committee’s of the Tasmanian Government’s Renewable Energy Action Plan and the Western Australian Wave Energy Research Centre. Irene is on secondment from the University of Tasmania where she led several industry and Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) funded wave and tidal energy projects\, led a multi-disciplinary research team working in the field of marine renewable energy and contributed to educating maritime engineering students\, at the Australian Maritime College – National Centre for Maritime Engineering and Hydrodynamics.
